Teenage Bournemouth spin all-rounder Connor Smith struck a breezy 69 off 55 balls to halt a collapse by his adopted Australian side Altona North in the Victoria Turf Premier League earlier today.
Defending champions Altona had slipped from a promising 123-1 to 160-6 when Smith arrived at the crease to strike three sixes and five fours, his 69 helping post an eventual 276 against West Coburg St Andrews West, who were 14 without loss at the end of the first day's play. The match resumes next Saturday when Smith should get a decent left-arm spin bowl.
Bashley (Rydal) all-rounder George Wilson scored runs and took wickets for South Tamworth, who had an emphatic win against Tamworth District CA rivals Old Boys in Northern New South Wales.
He hit 59 in South Tamworth's 303-9 and followed up a first innings return of 1-16 by taking three of the seven Old Boys poles lost in their second dig. He finished with a pleasing 3-23.
Basingstoke & North Hants spin all-rounder Dubs Wood took 2-25 for Newcastle City but was run out for eight as his club chased down Cardiff-Boolaroo's 135-8 of the penultimate ball in a rain-cut affair. Havant's Richard Hindley played for Cardiff-Boolaroo in a previous life.
Lymington youngsters Dan Cox and Jude Tollerfield have caught the eye playing for Middle Park with runs and wickets in Melbourne's South Bayside League, based around the F1 race track.
Cox was man of the match with 59 and 3-18 in Park's win against Clayton District, while Tollerfield had made scored of 34* and 35* in the opening weeks of the season.
